Tie off your first leg (Leg 1), leave a long

tail for sewing.

Make the second leg (Leg 2)

and do not tie it off. Using the following instructions, you will be stitching part of the legs together and then crocheting around the legs to join them together and create the rest of the body. This is why you do not want to tie off yet.

First, you need to stitch the legs together so there will be no gap between the legs. Hold the legs together so that Leg 1 is to the left of the Leg 2. The loop on Leg 2 ( from which you would crochet more stitches with) should be right next to where you tied off Leg 1, so that the next stitch you would crochet on Leg 2 could be done right onto

Leg 1 (which you will do later). Taking the tail from Leg 1, whip stitch 4 stitches together from each leg (the stitches should be matched up to keep your count accurate). Tie off and cut the tail shorter.

Now that your legs are stitched together (think of the inside seam of a pair of pants) you will crochet around both legs.

R18: Your first stitch should be taking your yarn loop from Leg 2 and sc onto Leg 1.

Move your stitch marker as needed to mark this as your first stitch and sc around. (Note: since you whip stitched 4 stitches in the middle of the legs together, now each leg

will have 12 stitches (24 all the way around).

If you count your stitches and find that you have one or two off, unravel your round and try again; look for any stitches that might have gotten squished during your stitching of the middle that you might not have seen.

If you cannot find your 24 stitches and are

still off by one or two stitches, try increasing

or decreasing as needed throughout the

round, spacing them out as you do so.

Continue in the round as usual:

Assembly

Attaching the Head/Body to the Legs

 Line up the Head/Body piece (which should be fully stuffed) with the legs. Make sure you’re lining up the back of the lower half to the back of the upper half (line up your end-points).

Using the long tail from the Head/Body, whipstitch the two pieces together and add more

stuffing into the midsection as you secure the pieces. If needed, use safety pins to help hold

the pieces together. Watch as you’re stitching around: if you notice that his face is not entirely facing front, you can always pull out your whipstitches and try again after adjusting the top half’s placement on the lower half.

Curling the Toe

 Before attaching the feet, you need to bend the toe back and secure down to give Genie’s shoes that curled-toe look. Take the yarn tail and thread it up through the toe.

While you fold the toe over against the shoe, bring your thread down into the shoe and out through the bottom, pulling the toe down. Then thread your needle back up a few stitches over into the toe and back down through the bottom of the shoe. Do this a few more times until the toe is securely folded against the shoe, then tie off. Pull the long tail back out through the round end of the shoe (or wherever it will be easiest for you to attach it to the leg).

Attaching the Feet to the Legs

 Using the leftover tail from the foot, position the foot onto the bottom of the leg and stitch

around the top edge of the foot, attaching it to the leg. Leave the tip of the toe sticking out

from the leg. Do this for each foot.

Attaching the Arms

 Attaching the arms requires some squishing of the top part of the arm to get it to lie at an

angle against the body. Then stitch around the arm, attaching it to the body so that a good

circular section of the arm is attached to the body. The tops of the arms should be placed

around rows 23-24 of the upper body.

The Face

The face is the most difficult part and requires some creative interpretation and trial and error.

I don’t have “patterns” of the mouth and eyes that you can cut out because depending on your

yarn and tension, the head you made may be bigger or smaller than my own. But I will show

you the process I used to create Genie’s face and explain how you can recreate your own!

Remember to look up photos of the animated Genie if you need inspiration!

The Eyes and Mouth

 Cut two eyes out of white felt. They

should be almost teardrop-shaped, but

a little longer, narrow, and rounder.

Place on the face to see how they look and trim as needed.

 Using black fabric paint, fabric markers, or another medium of your choice, create two small dots for the pupils on the eyes.

 Cut a mouth out of dark pink/red/burgundy felt. The mouth should be wide and gaping; I made many different mouths before deciding what shape I wanted. Try looking up different photos of Genie; his mouth is one of his most expressive features so it might take a few tries to get the shape you want AND a nice size for your face. Place it on his face with the eyes and nose to help judge placement and size when trimming (he’ll look pretty creepy without his tongue and teeth!).
